Dutch Grading System
The Dutch grading system, used from elementary through university education is the 1 to 10 scale given in the following table, in which 10 is the highest grade, 6 the minimum pass and 1 the lowest grade. Lecturers uniformly comment on the great difficulty in obtaining 9's and 10's and the respectability of 6's. There is also agreement that an 8 represents a high level of achievement, while grades 6 and 7 generally account for the majority of passing grades awarded.
- The full-time workload per academic year is 60 ECTS (30 ECTS per semester).
- 1 ECTS = 28 study load hours (including self-study hours).
- For a Bachelor, 240 ECTS have to be obtained in total.
Grading Distribution Table
In accordance with the Erasmus Charter and its ECTS User’s Guide, HAS University of Applied Sciences includes a so-called Grading Distribution Table (hereafter referred to as GDT) in each Transcript of Records and each Diploma Supplement. The GDT facilitates the interpretation of each grade awarded and allows a more straightforward comparison of two or more grading systems and cultures.
Why a GDT?
Due to different cultural and academic traditions, European educational systems have developed not only different national grading scales but also different ways of using them within the same country, in different subject areas and institutions.
While it is essential to acknowledge these differences, it is also important to make them transparent within the European Higher Education Area, so that grades awarded in all countries, subject areas or institutions can be properly understood and correctly compared.
Transparency
HAS students who have taken part of their education at an institution abroad have the right to fair treatment and to transparency of their grades when credits are transferred from one institution to another, as access to further studies, grants or other benefits may depend on their level of performance. Transparency of performance levels is equally important for graduates applying for a job in their own or in another country.
To further ensure transparent and coherent information on the performance of the individual student, HAS University of Applied Sciences provides a statistical distribution table of the passing grades awarded to the entire student population of HAS over the past 2 years.

The GDT shown below is based on all passing grades awarded to the entire student population of HAS in course years 2013/2014 and 2014/2015.
